The Buick Open may be headed to the scrap-heap of golfing history following GMs announcement that they will no longer be sponsoring the golf tournament.
With the auto manufacturer contributing the $5 million purse at the tournament, it is unlikely that the event will continue in 2010. Citizens of the town of the tournaments host town, Flint, are bracing for the worst.
The Buick Open is the most prestigious thing we do in this community,” Jerry Preston, president of the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau told the Associated Press.
Following GMs bailout earlier this year, the company is becoming increasingly careful about how it spends its money. In the past year GM has implemented drastic cuts to various sports sponsorships including baseball and Nascar racing.
Tournament organizers are, however, hoping to lure other sponsors into keeping the Buick Open alive.
“If we lose the sponsor … there are several Michigan companies that are ready to step forward,” Preston concluded. “We’re extremely grateful to Buick for being the sponsor all these years.”
